The sixth grade experience is thoughtfully designed as a bridge between the single-teacher experience (with specialists) students have in 5th grade and the teacher-per-subject experience (with specialists) they have in 7th and 8th grades.
In 6th grade, students have two core subject teachers - one who teaches English and Social Studies, and one who teaches Math and Science. The teachers collaborate on the curriculum throughout the year and plan lessons, activities, field trips and projects that resonate across subject areas. The beginning of 6th grade is structured as an "Introduction to Middle School." Students receive an orientation-lasting approximately two months-regarding skills and habits crucial for academic and social achievement.
A three-day, two-night trip to the Marin Headlands highlights the beginning of 6th grade. Through this outdoor educational experience, students engage in activities involving team building and social awareness. These values are echoed in classes and the intimate advisory groups that meet bi-weekly.
