The path to lifelong learning begins in the elementary years, by establishing the building blocks of literacy, numeracy and the scientific process. Concurrently, children are exposed to people and places as close as the adjacent classroom or the creek down the street, to as far away as Africa and Asia as well as different time periods such as the Gold Rush and the Age of Exploration. Led by teachers who understand when children are developmentally ready for new concepts, students grow to be analytical readers, eloquent writers, curious scientists and expressive artists. Our curriculum balances teaching and practice of key skills with many hands-on opportunities to read quality literature, design experiments, build models and solve real problems. As music instruction informs mathematical thinking, for example, we value both core subjects and the arts, weaving Spanish, art, technology, physical education, literature and music into our program's tapestry.
Respect and Responsibility
Because academic excellence, social development, personal initiative and self-confidence go hand in hand, our Bill of Rights informs everything we do, stating, "Everyone at Windrush has the right to learn, play and work in a safe and nurturing environment." Early each year, students and teachers establish class constitutions, followed by weekly meetings to discuss and solve issues that arise. Teachers establish discipline through mutual respect and problem solving, following a school-wide conflict resolution model that teaches students there are consequences for their actions while concurrently showing them how to apologize both through words and actions. The result is a caring community of learners and leaders.
Community and Service
There are many diverse opportunities for friendship between both students and families and we take the time to cultivate close partnerships between home and school. Opportunities abound within and beyond the school community for service learning and social justice work. We encourage connections across ages, genders and social groups through weekly assemblies, "Mix It Up Days" and the Buddy Program, which pair students with middle school mentors. Faculty and parents at Windrush see themselves as lifelong learners, as well, and take advantage of many wonderful opportunities for professional growth and dialogue. Above all, a sense of play and contentment shines through our daily work as we honor and take delight in kids' lives and in the wonder of childhood.

About Kindergarten
Kindergarten at Windrush is its own very special place and time. Two adjoining classrooms share an expansive deck and shaded yard with a climbing structure, playhouse and sandbox. The program serves as an excellent transition from preschool, with an emphasis on building the foundation for a life of social and academic learning and experience. Hands-on, thematic projects that integrate early numeracy and literacy work are the program's hallmark. Our teachers are particularly adept at attending to the cognitive and socio-emotional needs of this important stage. Here is where it all begins!
K-5 Afterschool Program
More than 30 years ago, a group of working parents seeking an excellent full-day program started Windrush. On-site care begins at 7:00 a.m. until classes begin and from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. Care is also offered on many school holidays. The atmosphere is of a neighborhood recreation center, with kids joyfully engaged in a wide variety of activities ranging from woodworking and cooking to cooperative games and soccer. A nutritious snack is served daily, and homework help is available.
Particular attention is given to welcoming new Kindergartners and providing additional responsibilities and opportunities for 5th graders. All elementary students receive superb care from experienced teachers, many of whom also serve in the school day program. Windrush School safety protocols as well as the Bill of Rights and conflict resolution are an integral part of Afterschool and the program director attends elementary faculty meetings on a regular basis. With a stimulating program, "Already?" is a common response to a parent's late afternoon arrival for pick-up!
