Windrush School - Where Minds Flourish
About Our Board

MEET THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Windrush Board of Trustees is comprised of current and former parents/guardians, community trustees (not otherwise affiliated with the school), and our Head of School (also a current parent). Windrush School is a non-profit corporation governed by the State of California’s laws. The board has a fiduciary responsibility for the corporation, which means that it holds the school and its future in trust. The board does so by fulfilling three functions:

1.   The board is the steward of the mission, and with the Head of School sets and ensures the school’s strategic direction.

2.   The board is the ultimate steward of the school’s resources (people, property and facilities, and finances) now and for the future.

3.   The board hires, supports and evaluates the Head of School.

The board is accountable for assuring the institution’s health as it achieves its non-profit mission. Its sole employee is the Head of School, to whom the board delegates all accountability and authority for operational leadership. Thus, trustees do not have direct accountability nor decision-making authority with respect to school operations, human resources (faculty or staff hiring, evaluation, termination, etc.) or curricular choices. The board sets expectations for the Head of School through articulation of the mission, adoption of organizational policies, approval of financial plans, budgets, and the Head of School’s annual goals. The Head of School is accountable for meeting these expectations through leadership. Trustees work in partnership with the Head of School, collaborating to set strategic direction and resolve strategic issues, and seeking advice from one another while not over-stepping the boundaries of authority. During the 2008-09 school year, the Board of Trustees engaged the entire Windrush community in a strategic planning process. The resulting Strategic Plan–which articulates the school mission, core values and strategic direction–guide’s the board’s work. The Strategic Plan can be found here.

Meet some of our trustees!

Lucy Aghadjian is in her fourth year of board service. She is a retired President of the Windrush Family Association. Lucy’s passion for local and organic produce inspired her to launch the Windrush Farm Stand, which brings fresh fruit and vegetables to subscribers every week while raising money for the school. She wanted to be a trustee because she cares deeply about the stability of the institution and was inspired by people she respects accomplishing important work.

“There is a very caring, diverse and intelligent group of people who deeply care about the community,” she remarked about the board.

While a trustee, Lucy aspires to strengthen enrollment and ensure financial stability. “Some massive fundraising breakthrough would be great too,” she said. As the bookkeeper of a non-profit organization who must satisfy auditors each year, Lucy’s background benefits Windrush’s financial priorities. She views her service as an “opportunity to think strategically and learn from very, very smart people” and appreciates being able to give back while learning about the organization’s inner workings.

“It's rewarding to have energized discussions and really look at issues from different perspectives,” she said.

A stellar volunteer, Lucy has helped out in many capacities at Windrush as well as in the culinary and environmental realms. Lucy grew up in southern California and graduated with a B.S. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. While in university, she lived in Grenoble, France for a year where she learned to speak fluent French while skiing a lot. She now owns a catering business, a career she got into about 20 years ago. When not catering, accounting or volunteering, Lucy likes to write, ski, run and lie in the hot sun on the beach.

Kelly Bulkeley has served as a trustee since 2008. He has three children who are Windrush alumni. Windrush appeals to him for its “rare combination of idealism and pragmatism, along with an admirable willingness to chart a new course forward in 21st century education.” Though Kelly is generally not a “committee-joining type person,” he said he couldn't resist the opportunity to work with Head of School Ilana Kaufman to help the school during this exciting time of growth.

“It's fascinating to see all the systems and processes that need to work well for the school to provide the education our children love,” he said.

Kelly has served on boards for other academic organizations–the American Academy of Religion and the International Association for the Study of Dreams. As a writer and teacher, he understands issues surrounding education, particularly developmental psychology. While serving on the board, Kelly often draws from his experience with value-based education and progressive teaching practices. Regarding his time on the board, he hopes to bring Windrush’s full potential to fruition.

Kelly was born and raised in the Bay Area. He has a B.A. from Stanford University, a Master’s from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Religion and Psychological Studies from the University of Chicago. In his spare time, Kelly enjoys running, hiking, playing Frisbee, reading and gardening.

“There’s no better way to feel like you're really contributing to your child's education,” Kelly said, regarding his service on the board.

Sarah Flowers, Chair of the Board, is in her second year of service. As Head of Archway School, Sarah was interested in contributing to an independent school like Windrush and participating in school governance. She enjoys bringing an outside voice to discussions and working with people who are devoted to Windrush and education.

“It’s an honor that comes with significant responsibility, but equally great reward,” she said, regarding her service.

Sarah appreciates Windrush School for its mission and the community’s passion. She also admires Head of School Ilana Kaufman’s vision and leadership and the board’s devotion and hard work. Sarah has previous board experience from serving on Archway’s Board of Trustees for seven years. She has also volunteered in several school districts and with Project Open Hand in San Francisco.

Born in the United Kingdom and raised in Maine, Sarah said she is a “a product of independent schools on the East Coast.” She has a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy from Hendrix College. Sarah also took graduate classes in Psychology at Harvard University and San Francisco State University. She is currently finishing a Master’s in Independent School Leadership at the University of Hawaii.

In her free time, Sarah most enjoys being with her husband and son, cooking, skiing, writing, and mentoring new teachers and heads.

“I’m delighted to join the school community and look forward to the months ahead as I get to know Windrush even better!”

Troy Tyler has served on the board since 2009. He became a trustee because he wanted to help create the Strategic Plan. Troy finds planning the direction of school programs, and financial development rewarding. While on the board, Troy wants to contribute to building a sustaining annual Gala and Farm Stand program.

“The Windrush community strength stems from the dedication and passion of its parents,” Troy said. “Serving on the Windrush board is an opportunity to use your passion toward meeting the school's strategic and tactical goals.”

Windrush appeals to Troy for its “strong, academically focused progressive education” and its ability to instill children with a “real love of learning, intellectual curiosity and caring that one does not find in all schools.”

“This special learning environment is enhanced by the vibrant, loving community of parents, teachers and administrators all focused on the well being of our kids,” he said.

Raised in Houston, TX, Troy graduated with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin. After working for a general contractor in Washington, D.C. constructing industrial and institutional projects, he moved to California and shifted his career focus to sustainable and renewable energy. Currently, Troy works at SunPower Corporation where he manages a technical training team. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer, cycling and sailing.
