Windrush School - Where Minds Flourish
Fundraising FAQs

What is the school's budget? Where does the revenue come from?

The Windrush School budget for 2009 - 2010 is approximately $6.5 Million.  About 7% of those expenses are funded through fundraised revenues of which Annual Giving is the largest component.

Why not increase tuition instead of having a fundraising campaign?

As an independent school, Windrush is not funded by tax dollars.  We rely on tuition and contributed income  for annual operating expenses.  It is normal and healthy for independent schools to have a gap between tuition revenue and operating expenses.  If we raised tuition to cover all our expenses, we would lose many of the students and families who make the Windrush community special and donors would lose the opportunity to make a tax-deductible gift. Voluntary giving allows donors to realize a tax-deduction while helping the school cover costs. Tuition payments aren't tax-deductible; donations are.

Why does Windrush have a fundraising campaign?

Like all independent schools, Windrush expenses are higher than the revenue we receive from tuition.  We rely on you to help meet our costs.  A fundraising campaign seeks participation from all families.  This helps build a sense of community and sends a message to outside funders that Windrush School is among our top priorities.  And, a fundraising campaign provides families with an opportunity to support the school and receive a tax deduction.

Who else gives to the Annual Giving Campaign?

In addition to current families, we ask alumni students and families, staff, faculty, grandparents and friends, and businesses with whom we have a relationship.

How is the Annual Giving Campaign different from the Expanding Horizons Campaign?

The Annual Giving Campaign raises needed funds to help meet the operational needs of Windrush School this year.  The Exanding Horizons Campaign is raising $1.5 Million to enhance our academic and social programs, increase tuition assistance to a wider range of families, strengthen our ability to recruit and retain exceptional faculty and moderate future tuition increases.

Isn't fundraising for the wealthy?

Giving is for everyone.  Although wealthier families can give more, we depend on all families to give a gift that is personally significant.  If 100% of Windrush families contribute to the Annual Giving Campaign, Windrush will thrive and you will be a part of that success.

Do we ask foundations and corporations?

Yes.  Although most foundations and corporations do not fund independent schools, we are always seeking opportunities for funding.  If you have suggestions for a corporation or foundation that you think we can approach, please contact Ann Root, Director of Development, at 510-970-7580, ext. 231.

I already volunteer my time. Why doesn't that count?

We appreciate all the time and energy that Windrush families give to the school.  But, we rely on both the volunteer hours you work and the donations you give to the Annual Giving Campaign.  Both are essential to our ability to give Windrush students an outstanding education.
