About 8th Grade Social Studies

Welcome to Social Studies!

Social Studies is the study of human history, and draws upon various fields including:  sociology, political science, economics, religious studies, geography, psychology, anthropology and civics.  In their 8th grade year, Windrush students will examine United States History, from the founding of the nation to the dawn of the twentieth century.

The main text for 8th grade Social Studies is History Alive! The United States Through Industrialism.  Students will use the “Interactive Student Notebook” for the bulk of their critical thinking, note-taking, and processing activities.  In addition, various primary and secondary resources, fiction and non-fiction works, songs and videos will be woven into the curriculum.  Student will analyze history from multiple perspectives, and use inquiry and experiential activities to discover how the past is connected to the present.

Students will be reading, writing, and speaking on a regular basis in Social Studies.  They will have opportunities to research areas of particular interest, as well as share their perspectives on current events.  Project based learning is central to our work, and group work is highly encouraged.
