=SCHOOL NEWS AND NOTICES=

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:  The recent disasters in China and Myanmar have many of us thinking again about our emergency plans for home, school and workplace. Windrush School has been evaluated by Degenkolb Engineers who determined  our buildings and site meet the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program life-safety standards. The Windrush staff and faculty are trained to follow a detailed emergency plan. The school maintains an Earthquake /Emergency Information File containing records for each student, including medical information, release for treatment and instructions for pick up and release during an emergency. Students are to be released only to individuals designated in the Earthquake/Emergency Information Files. Classroom backpacks contain emergency release forms and ID cards for each student to wear that indicate who is authorized to pick up the student. Staff will carry emergency backpacks during any evacuation. Please remember to notify the front office if your emergency contact information changes.

Meanwhile, if you want to help victims of the recent disasters, Unicef and Doctors Without Borders are among those on the ground in Myanmar and China. Wondering what charities are the most effective during a disaster?  Go to Charity Navigator, an independent non-profit charity evaluator.

EXPANDING HORIZONS CAMPAIGN – Last Saturday the El Cerrito Community Center was transformed with shimmering lights, fabulous food, and sparkling conversation for a celebration honoring the collective generosity of this community. Our thanks to event co-chairs Sandy McCoy and Sue Burger, design designer Charlie Moco, caterer Lucy Aghadjian and photographer Hagit Cohen, who created a wonderful evening enjoyed by over 100 people. Expanding Horizons Campaign Co-Chair Jane Breyer and Tom Hoynes thanked everyone for their generosity in helping us raise over $800,000 so far toward our campaign goal of of $1.5M. Ilana Kaufman spoke eloquently about the meaning of this campaign for the future of Windrush School:

“Windrush is a deeply hopeful and forward-thinking community, centered around a core faith that is unique to this community constellation. This year you have galvanized around core principles of an extraordinary program, affection for innovation and future gazing--these are all attributes that suggest we are believers.

Wherever I go in the Windrush community, whomever I meet, I encounter activists of all sorts – folks inspired and moved to continue and create a school that embraces ideas based on values and vision. Windrush folks are resilient, serious and inspiring. The Windrush community is, to some extent, a movement headed towards a new tomorrow. The Campaign, and this new building, the families, the kids and the colleagues – we are a movement inspired to face today’s challenges, which enables us to embrace all that tomorrow has to offer.

Windrush School is a collection of individuals and actions that are indeed grand and heroic. We are participating in creating the change we want to see on behalf of our children. It is our children who are living the change we promised them, that they deserve--so they experience many, many new days filled with wonder, love, meaning and hope.” – Ilana Kaufman

The kindergarten Sprites and Zephyrs have welcomed new creatures to their midst, and named our new mother hens in honor of their beloved coop builders, Dave Grayson and Tim Ryan. “Miss Tim” and “Lady Dave” are currently sitting on more than a dozen eggs, and as of Monday night, three baby chicks had hatched! They are a gift from beloved Windrush Farm Stand purveyors, Riverdog Farm. The owners of Riverdog, Tim Mueller and Trini Campbell, wanted to share the egg magic with our kids. These brooding hens join us to share the life cycle with our kids, to connect our children to the creatures that feed us, and to love up the cutest little chicks in the world. Thanks to Becca Ratcliff, our in house “chicken mommy” who has already put the eggs back in the nest once.. – Lucy Aghadjian, Windrush Parent Association

=STAFF NEWS=

Middle School Math teacher Chris Harrison recently passed the qualifying exam and has been advanced to candidacy for the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at the School of Education, Mills College. Chris will continue to teach 7th and 8th grade math at Windrush while he conducts his dissertation research. He writes, “I will spend the next year conducting a qualitative study of students [in various educational institutions], looking at how metacognition is developed as students learn science in a web-based environment that is supposed to promote metacognitive thinking. I simply want to understand how students make meaning of science as they interface with a web-based learning environment. This study will have implications for how math and science is taught in elementary and secondary school settings.”

A man who models life-long learning for his students, Chris has also been accepted into the Exploratorium's Teacher Institute this summer. He looks forward to participating in “Making Mathematical Sense of Our World” in which teachers create hands-on activities that integrate applied math and science concepts. Chris is a Research Fellow alumnus (2004-2006) of the center for Technology Enhanced Learning in Science (TELS), which brings university researchers and technologists together with middle school and high school educators to improve instruction in science.  Established by the National Science Foundation as a national Center for Learning and Teaching, TELS is headquartered at the University of California, Berkeley. As a TELS Fellow, Chris studied the role of educational leadership, school policy, and professional development. He recently received accolades from Professor Elizabeth Baker for his presentation to her Mills College Mid-Career Math and Science Teacher Preparation Program, having given “the best lecture they have had all year.”

As many of you know, Jean Witzke is a consummate artist in keeping the front office running smoothly. We’re happy to report that the El Cerrito Art Association also recognizes her talents. Her oil pastel, Holiday Cactus, took first place at the 32nd Annual Art Show. You can take a peek at Jean’s stunning work in her Studio Art Album.  Meanwhile her son Ben, whom you may know as a counselor at our Windrush summer camp, took first place for his Graphics/ Computer Manipulation Self Portrait and honorable mentions for Octopus Garden and San Francisco Fog!

Maer Ben-Israel has accepted the position of Technology and Network Specialist for next year. Maer comes to us after eight years at the French-American International School as Manager of Information Systems and Information Technology Administrator. He enjoys utilizing and supporting technology for education, art, music, and community activism.

Kay Bachman is looking forward to taking on the role of Elementary P.E. teacher before the end of the school year, rather than beginning in the fall. This will allow Jeff Mool, our current teacher, to begin his clinical internship in counseling and psychology at an earlier date. Jeff is excited about having completed his graduate studies in counseling psychology and is grateful to Kay for her willingness to begin her work at Windrush during this school year rather than next. As you may recall from her earlier introduction to the Windrush community, Kay Bachman has a great deal of experience and passion for the integration of exercise, stretching, nutrition, cooperative games and team sports into a truly well-rounded physical education program.

Samantha Worthington will also begin her work as Communications Coordinator before the end of this school year so that interim Communications Director Natasha Beery can be present for the transition. Soon you’ll see Samantha’s name as editor of the Windrush Wire; she looks forward to using her skills in writing, reporting and publicity in supporting the work of the Front Office, Admissions, Development, the WPA, and Division Offices in communicating effectively with all constituencies.

SCIENCE FAIR INTERVIEWERS NEEDED: Our Middle School science teachers, Morgan and Keith, are looking for adult interviewers for the May 15 Science Fair. You don’t need to be a Middle School parent, nor do you need to have a science degree–just a desire to engage in dialogue with our talented young middle school scientists. The interviewing process will be different this year, as 6th grade is not part of the competition. The judging procedure has been revised for the 7th and 8th  grades in order to ensure a smooth and quick deliberation process. If you would like to participate, please contact Keith at ext. 228 or or Morgan at ext. 218.

YEARBOOK ADS AND SPONSORS:  Hello Windrush Community! The middle school yearbook team needs to raise funds to help cover the production cost of our award-winning yearbook. We have two great ways you can contribute. Any individual can purchase advertisement space in our yearbook. These ads can be for your business and/or can include messages and congratulations to students. The second option is to sponsor a page. Each color page of the yearbook costs $80 to print. You can choose a page to sponsor and we will include your name on that page! Please download our Yearbook Sponsorship form on the Windrush School Forms and Flyers page. – Morgan Costanzo, Yearbook Advisor

= WINDOW ON WINDRUSH =

Windrush Sixth Grader Caitlin K. won second place in the California Young Writers Contest with this poem:

Small though it may be

The weak sapling

Branches thin, roots doggedly

Gripping the rich brown earth

Spotted, flaky bark

And spring-green

Limbs

Nursed back to

Health by

The gentle warmth

And beads of moisture

Issued by spring.

Though robbed of

Meager sunlight by greedy,

Larger trees,

It holds the precious

Gift of life in brittle branches

As it stakes its claim in the garden

Still fragile, but

Growing

Stronger

Every

Day.

Then, at 7:00 p.m. we will host Windrush Presents: The Elements of Green Building (see further information below). Please note: there will be no parking in the traffic circle during this event. Please feel free to bring a picnic blanket to enjoy dinner on the front lawns.

To RSVP, call 970-7580, ext. 215 or send an email. If you wish to reserve childcare for the 7:00 p.m. Windrush Presents talk, please make a note of the request with your RSVP.

Windrush Presents: The Elements of Green Building – April 23, 7:00 p.m. This event is open to the general public, and features Ratcliff architect Brian Feagans, with Windrush Trustees Jon McPherson and Tom Beach, who will discuss environmentally responsible practices both as they have been applied to Windrush School’s new building and in a larger context, providing the tools and inspiration to integrate sustainable ideas into future building or renovation projects. In addition to their experience with and passion for the Windrush project, the presenters have extensive professional experience in green building, renewable energy, and construction management. Share the event flyer with friends with personal or professional interests in Green Building.

E-CYCLE EVENT – April 24:  If your Spring Cleaning includes getting rid of old electronic equipment, Windrush can help you keep lead, mercury and cadmium out of the waste stream. As part of our Earth Week activities, we will be sponsoring an “E-Cycle” day on Thursday, April 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A truck will be parked in the lower parking lot. Plan to bring your discarded computers, printers, monitors, cell phones, DVD players, batteries, and other electronic waste for responsible recycling. You can also obtain certified disposal and secure data destruction for old hard drives! Share the flyer about the E-Cycle opportunity with your friends and neighbors too – the more the merrier!

SAVE THE DATE – MAY 3, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. We’re saving a place for you! Ilana Kaufman and the Board of Trustees are inviting all donors to the Expanding Horizons Campaign, as well as all first-year families who have participated in Annual Giving, to a special celebration dinner in honor of this community’s generosity to Windrush School. This will be a delicious, Mediterranean, sit-down dinner! Please respond by April 25 so we may set the correct number of places. If you have made your donation but have not yet received an emailed invitation, please check your spam filter for a message from mail@mail.socializr.com, or contact Melissa in the Development Office. We will continue to email the invitations as your gifts and pledges come in. Gifts at all levels are meaningful and appreciated; please join us!

We’ll begin on Tuesday, April 22 with Save Electricity Day, followed by Carpool/Bike/Check Tire Pressure Day, Save Paper Day, and No Trash Lunch Day. ERB TESTING UPDATE: During the week of April 28 to May 2, students in grades 3 through 8 will be taking ERB tests during the first two hours of school. What can you do to help your students prepare?  Help them get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, and bring a healthy snack to school. Out of school appointments should not be scheduled during this time. Please make sure that students arrive on time. If a student arrives late, that student will have to schedule a make-up test time. Middle school students must arrive no later than 8:00 a.m.; testing starts promptly at 8:10 a.m. Students should bring a book every day for silent reading times in between tests. Also, students in grades 5-8 need to bring a calculator on Wednesday, April 30 for the Math test given at the end of the week. Download the letter from Ilana Kaufman for further information and background on the ERB tests.

=NOTES FROM THE EXPANDING HORIZONS CAMPAIGN=

Our daughter Hana loves Windrush School, and we can tell the feeling is mutual. Hana is thriving socially, emotionally and academically. Her parents are happy here too!  We are glad to have the opportunity to affirm, recognize, support and reward the special relationship between our daughter and her school. We are excited to participate in Windrush School’s community; to be part of its growth, hopes and vision, and to support the expansion plans and our visionary Head of School.

Everyone at Windrush works so hard for us, for every parent. It is as if the school is a treasured employee. So if tuition pays the wages, then our giving is a "thank you" gift, a bonus, for a job well done. We give to the annual campaign, knowing our gift helps bridge the gap between tuition and costs, and we give to the Expanding Horizon Campaign, knowing we’re planting the seeds of the school’s future. We know that the school appreciates a range of giving capabilities, and while we wish our gift could be as large as our appreciation for the school, we know that it’s the thought that counts.  -Betty Bleicher and Paul Minsky

STAFF NEWS:  We are delighted to announce that Lisa Hayle will teach 6th grade Humanities next year when Jennifer Daly leaves us to live abroad. Lisa is an experienced and creative teacher with a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She has taught Language Arts and Visual Arts to elementary and middle school students in a variety of settings, including Live Oak School in San Francisco, Sankofa Academy in Oakland and Antioch Charter Academy. Her UC Berkeley Extension work with the Bay Area Writers Project further enhances her ability to elicit superb writing from her students. The middle school faculty is delighted to welcome this multi-talented teacher to their team.

Helen Kang came to Windrush as a maternity leave substitute kindergarten teacher, after a two-year internship at Head Royce School. When the position of kindergarten teacher re-opened this year, Helen was one of many strong candidates who applied for the position. Her very moving letter of application spoke to the profound importance of her experience at Windrush, her gratitude for the opportunities here for professional growth and support, and her confidence in the techniques she has developed in math, literacy, social studies, science and art. “Windrush has made an incredible investment in my professional growth and I feel strongly that the community and the people who have made this investment in me should reap the dividends of this growth.”  Helen is enthusiastic about continuing to work with Windrush students and families, praising their sensitivity and creativity, and is excited about the potential for further growth here at Windrush. She was the overwhelming choice of the search committee. We are delighted that this talented and dedicated teacher will continue to team with Annie Zesiger in our stellar kindergarten program.

BRINGING BACK THE YUMMY: This week the Windrush Farm Stand subscribers enjoyed: beautiful pink lady apples from Smit Apple Ranch, tasty leeks, green garlic, and fennel from Riverdog, crunchy carrots from Full Belly, nourishing gai chow, Jerusalem artichoke, and red leaf lettuce from Lou Vue, a fabulous oro blanco pomelo from Twin Girl, as well as organic Bartlett pears and lovely pixie tangerines. A tasty recipe was included in the box, as always.

The WPA, in partnership with Windrush students & faculty, invite you to subscribe to your weekly Windrush Farm Stand box for the remainder of the school year. We also welcome subscriptions from your friends, neighbors and co-workers! Download the Farm Stand Order Form here. This innovative program has brought over 24,000 pounds of locally grown organic produce to our community so far this year.
